Kindness Challenge - Month 3

Kindness Challenge - Building Momentum

The Kindness Challenge is a 6 month jump start to learn how to successfully implement an outward focus into the DNA of your church in fun, easy and exciting ways.

Great fruit and change come as a result of people and churches tapping into the power of servant evangelism, doing acts of kindness to show God's love in practical ways.

Commit to trying various serving projects and various locations to find your church's favorite ones.   We recommend that you commit to 6 months (26 weeks) to go out and serve once a week. This is long enough to make and see a difference in your community and in your members and not so long that is seems daunting.

Commit to going out in ones, twos, in small groups, as a whole church, and also partnering with other churches.

The philosophy behind SE is that you are planting and flinging seeds. You aren't just going out and doing good deeds. You are practicing deliberate, prayerful acts of love through kindness. We believe the motto: "Serve em all and let God sort 'em out!"

As you and your church commit to serving/doing outreach each week for 6 months (26 weeks) you will see people's lives change.

Doing a couple projects is not the same as finding the keys that will lead into the hearts of people around your community.  THE KEYS CHANGE ALL THE TIME, what works one year may not work the next. The message of love doesn't change, but the delivery methods must be open to change.

"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can." -- John Wesley

"We realize that what we are accomplishing is a drop in the ocean. But if this drop were not in the ocean, it would be missed."

 -- Mother Teresa

This third month builds on the previous two and after you implement this month's material you should see some momentum being built. It is key to help change your people's mindset, and in this month you will listen to a sermon Steve Sjogren gave to Coastland Church, which you can model and use with your people. You will also help your people know what to say when they are out doing outreach. Also, included in this month is an excerpt from the book Seeing Beyond Church Walls that will help your church transition into an outward-focused mindset. You are free to print off and distribute this chapter of the book to all of your people!

By this point, it is possible people you have served will call your church for more information. We have a short quiz to help you figure out if your church phone system is helping people connect to your church, or turning them away.

Be sure to download the Month 3 Journal Notes 2 page document as a way to record your thoughts on this month of The Kindness Challenge.

Part 1: The New Normal
Steve Sjogren
Part of catching the vision for the outward focused life is walking in what Steve calls the "New Normal." Here is a great sermon that he gave recently that you can adapt and use in your own church. Included is the sermon outline, and downloadable MP3. . . . keep reading
Part 2: A God-Sized Transformation: Helping A Traditional Church See Beyond Church Walls.
ServeCoach.com
A traditional church has huge walls. Not the brick and mortar type…but just as effective in keeping those outside out, and those inside from seeing them. Walls get formed and cemented over time, and it takes seeing and acting in new ways to help melt away the barriers between "us" and "them." Dr. Stephen Ayers gives step-by-step guidance for leading one's traditional church through a "God-Sized Transformation" to see beyond the walls. . . . keep reading
Part 3: Is Your Church Phone System Turning People Away?
ServeCoach.com
We go out into the community and serve hundreds of people. Our desire is to show God's love in a practical way, to help nudge people closer to a living relationship with Him. After we have served folks, let's not forget that we need to follow through. We have stepped out to serve people and our actions are inviting people to try church. We need to continue the same smiling, welcoming attitude when they call the church, that we are communicating when out on the streets. . . . keep reading
BONUS: What Do We Say When Doing Outreach?
Janie Sjogren
When you are out showing God's love through practical acts of kindness, you will get into conversations with the people you are serving. "What do I say?" is consistently a question that those who are new to serving others will ask. This 3 page document will help answer that question! . . . keep reading

 TESTIMONIALS
Here's what people are saying...
ServeCoach has been indispensable in helping us lead the church to be more outward focused. The interviews, resources, ideas have all generated an excitement about "showing God's love in practical ways, no strings attached" by doing acts of kindness. Keep up the good work.

Here's the deal. I was really feeling defeated and bummed. I got connected to this website and I feel like I've been revived. I felt like there was only one other person in my entire church that really understood how I was feeling because he was feeling the same way. I watched an interview and am working on another one and boy was it just what I needed to see and hear. I had all but given up, but now I have renewed hope and I'm hanging in there! So thanks Serve Coach team!

Whether you're just starting out or have been doing outreach for years, ServeCoach is a fantastic site. There are so many resources and ideas, I can barely keep up. I first joined thinking I would look through everything, get what I needed, and cancel after a month.  But ServeCoach has proven to have much more than I thought, and very valuable to the ministry I serve in.

Steve Sjogren has been coaching leaders for as long as I’ve known him over twenty-plus years. He’s a catalytic leader, challenging “status quo” views of everything from church growth to evangelism methodologies to leadership paradigms.

Steve’s hyper-creativity and genuine love for “not-yet-believers” provide the one-two punch for effective ministry. I’ll never forget the words of a churchplanter who once told me, “After spending time with Steve, I always feel more courageous!”

And who wouldn’t want to be mentored by The Father of Servant Evangelism?

I first heard of Steve Sjogren when my wife read his first book, Conspiracy of Kindness and got fired up about water giveaways and it ignited us to find more ways to serve our community and the people around us. We just got our hands on anything that would be of a value to anyone else and gave it away - Just to show God's love in a practical way and told people, if there is anything you need let us know - no strings attached... and here we are, 14 years later! That is a timeless truth - Showing God's love in practical ways with no strings attached.

Steve has helped create this culture of serving - doing what it takes to show people God's love in practical ways. We have seen a lot of people come to Christ and made the decision to cross that line in faith... I think this is due to people getting outside the walls of the church and these creative serving ideas - a lot of them came right out of things that Steve has taught us. Just reaching into the community and making a difference. We get up in the morning thinking about who is hurting, who has loss, who is going through something and how can we figure out a way to let them know that they matter to God. That is what Servant Evangelism is all about!

Steve’s out-of-the-box thinking and decades of real-world practice makes him a Christian leader worth listening to. Pay attention to Steve; the church will never be the same.

I’ve known Steve Sjogren for over two decades as a friend, a very successful church planter, and a massively influential leader not only among American churches, but across the world.

Steve’s passionate focus on moving the church outward into the community and his contagious enthusiasm for reaching lost people has influenced my life and the lives of thousands of other pastors and leaders.

Steve’s out-of-the-box thinking and decades of real-world practice makes him a Christian leader worth listening to.  Pay attention to Steve; the church will never be the same.
