"The boys learned first-hand the power of prayer..."
I recently lead an Outreach to a local nursing home. I have 2 young boys, ages 10 and 9 who went along with me. I really wasn't sure what their reaction would be since they seem to be somewhat afraid of elderly people. When we arrived at the nursing home the boys were very timid and standoffish but they just stood there and listened and smiled. We came to a woman in a wheelchair who wanted us to pray for her leg, her name is Janice. She had had a stroke and couldn't walk and she wanted us to pray that she could walk again so she could “walk right on out of this place”. I asked her if we could lay hands on her leg and she said “yes” but the boys wanted no part of that, which was fine because we prayed for her and we could feel God's presence.
Next we went into a gathering room where some of the people were sleeping and some were watching television. We approached an elderly gentleman and offered him a card and then he just perked right up. He thanked us for the card, shook the boys hands (which they allowed) and told us his name was Sydney. Then Sydney said that he wanted to sing a song for us and he did. It was a beautiful song about Jesus and what a friend we have in him. The boys thought it was great.
After our outreach was over, we got in the car and I asked my boys what they thought and they told me that they couldn't wait to come back, they really liked “Syd”, my youngest said he was a friend and my oldest son told me that God was going to heal Janice and she was going to walk again.
We probably received more from this outreach than maybe the recipients at the nursing home did. The boys learned first hand the power of prayer. Even though they didn't see Janice get up and walk they still felt God's presence and they knew she had faith. They also came away wanting to go back and just talk to some of the people there. They told me that they wanted to hear their stories.

"He just wanted me to know that God loved me..."
I just got back from McDonalds on Nilles Road in Fairfield. It's Christmas Eve and I literally counted change from couch cushions and my car to buy some lunch for my son. When I got to the window the lady there told me that the man in front of me had paid for my food, and asked that she give me this card. It was a card for The Vineyard.
That man in front of me didn't know that I was a single mom, or that I'm not exactly the best, most sin free person in the world. He just wanted me to know that God loved me. I needed this more than he could have possibly known. Regardless of what I get for Christmas this year, I will consider that reminder the best gift.
Since he drove off before I could thank him personally, I just wanted to thank the church he came from for everything you do.

"I Just Wish We Had More Groceries..."
I am not one to write but today is different. When my wife asked are we going to serve this past weekend, I said sure... but i think i meant to say no. So Sunday rolls around and I am still going but unsure.
We get to the church she asked me what i want to do. I don't care, I said, something simple.
So we decide to do water hand outs - that seems safe to me. Then you got on the PA and said they need more people to go to Lincoln Heights. So i guess God spoke and we moved from water to grocery hand out. When we got where we were going, my wife and i were both surprised at the condition of the buildings. As we got out of our cars, the people recognized our leader Cap and people start walking up, pulling up in cars, and one boy on a bike, all wanting groceries. I am thinking how easy is this. Then Cap sends us off. The fear was over. The people were so grateful to get a simple bag of groceries. Only one lady did not want groceries but wanted prayer. Then she told us where a lady did need them. When we knocked on the door, this second lady was shocked to see us, as she said they did not have any food and didn't know what to do. When my wife asked if she wanted prayer she said yes because she and her daughter had been fighting. She called the daughter to come downstairs. She told us her daughter did not believe in God. The mother said, "See there is a God. Look we have food." I don't know if we made any difference in that girl's life but mine changed.
It doesn't seem like we were there long at all. It was not much of a sacrifice of time. I just wish we had more groceries. I will be back and not dragging my feet next time.
